The SOUP Garden

Square Foot Gardening has really taken off as an alternative to straight row growing.  The basic idea is to grow more in less space due to a combination of the perfect soil and requirements of space tailored to each vegetable.

The Ionia Kids Club has planted a variety of the basic square foot plan to test the ideas.  We changed 2 things from the basic square foot plans.  First, we planted directly in the soil that was present.  Having soil that has been good in the past for produce and stays fairly moist, we decided not to build up.  Second, we have lots of room and teens with long arms so we planted in 18 inch squares.  We did this in hopes to compensate for any issues with soil changes, and to allow more room for all the root veggies we planted.
